Boreholes do not progress in straight lines – they deviate at different rates and it is critically important that exploration geologists know the trajectory of exploration boreholes in three-dimensioanal space. Borehole trajectory is determined from a set of survey data and so it is widely accepted that, "a borehole is not a borehole unless it has been surveyed".
In this course you will learn some fundamental surveying concepts and you will learn the principles of operation of a range of different survey tools. Most importantly, you will learn about the major sources of error that are introduced into borehole survey data.
This course consists of 4 modules:
Module 1: Infornation required to plot the path of a borehole
Module 2: Instruments used to obtain borehole survey data
Module 3: Methods of conducting a directional survey
Module 4: Quality assurance of borehole survey data
